1) Gaming laptops are needed for most IT-related colleges. Not all of them are bulky and have bad battery life, though, you just looked at the wrong models and drew up a conclusion
2) Ideapad laptops are notoriously badly built. For a student who’s gonna carry and use it a lot, they are more than likely to break at the hinge before the end of their last year.
Talking from personal experience and from my friends’. Go with what is known to be reliable and combine that with what you can gather from other people. Look up known issues of specific models or brands. A lot of second hand thinkpads, for example, are much cheaper and much, much more reliable and well built than most first hands

Gaming laptop are good on battery. Reinstall fresh windows , make shure you have a laptop that can support undervolting and make shure you use hybrid mode for your gpus. I het 4-4.5 h of battery of simple tasks and 2-3h on something like solidworks.

Thereβs just no such thing as a good cheap laptop. You wouldn’t buy a new cheap car, because they suck. When you want a cheap car, you look at the used market.
Iβm not saying buy a used 15 year old laptop, but maybe consider refurbished.
The best laptop for a student is an old Thinkpad.

I’ve had my garbage dell for 6 years and It may have been a complete ripoff when I bought it but being able to repair everything on it (except CPU) is very nice. I would do a full over haul but its cpu is so bad I rather get a new laptop
